Help for selecting perfume

Setting up perfume categories is a rather subjective task. The fragrance families we use merely offer a practical guide to find your way in the enchantingly complex world of perfumes.

By event and season

By ingredient

Please note that the selected component may not necessarily be dominant in the composition.

Olfactive groups

Fresh: citrus, green, marine

Fresh: citrus, green, marine

The fresh scents are light, pure and exhilarating. They sparkle from the fresh citrus (bergamot, lemon, lime and grapefruit) and the green notes (freshly mowed grass, violet leaves). They also include the creations that evoke the sea or the fresh morning dew.
Floral: rose, jasmine and similar

Floral: rose, jasmine and similar

This group includes innumerable creations, ranging from exquisite bouquets that comprise many flowers to compositions that are based on a single flower. Perfumers can let loose their imagination, enriching the opulent flowers with greenish, sparkling aldehydes, fruity or spicy character.
Oriental: frankincense, vanilla, musk

Oriental: frankincense, vanilla, musk

The perfumes are strong and sensual with a warm effect. They owe their richness to components like amber, musk, frankincense, myrrh, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and vanilla which is often complemented by some opulent flower (orchid, rose), or some animalic or tobacco note.
Aromatic: spices, herbs

Aromatic: spices, herbs

They are characterised by accords based on one or more spices or herbs such as sage or rosemary. They often include citrus, lavender and ginger. The main feature of the typically masculine fougere (fern) perfumes to be classified here is the dual herbal note of greenish lavender and coumarin. Although in terms of fragrances it has nothing to do with fern, the name stuck.
Woody: vetiver, cedar, chypre

Woody: vetiver, cedar, chypre

Woody fragrances are mostly dry; their key components include notes such as sandalwood, patchouli, cedar and vetiver which is one of the favourite masculine elements. The structure of the chypre fragrances with a fresh and bitter effect classified into this group is defined fundamentally by the trinity of bergamot, labdanum and oak moss.
Gourmand: edible and fruity

Gourmand: edible and fruity

It is a relatively young olfactory group whose main elements include “edible” or even “drinkable” notes (e.g. absinthe). The most popular ones are fruity perfumes which spread since 1995. Generally, they have a floral heart but the fruits – peach, raspberry, apple, banana and pineapple – can be felt strongly. This group also includes expressly sweet, often vanilla fragrances that have an effect like candy floss.
Special: oud, leather, powder

Special: oud, leather, powder

This group includes special, nevertheless characteristic and popular fragrances that are difficult to classify into other categories. This category includes the unbelievably dear oil of agarwood, mystical oud (click: more about oud), smoky and sweet tobacco and the nostalgic scent of leather and powder.
